Betty Boo (aka
Alison Clarkson) is the official queen of Planet Boo.
Here's why...
PAST -
*Born Alison Moira Clarkson on 6th March 1970
in London
*Started rapping with The She Rockers in the late
80s
*Studied sound engineering at college
*Began solo career after recording 'Hey DJ' with
The Beatmasters
*Betty's debut LP was 'Boomania' in 1990. Her
highest chart hit was on it, 'Where Are You Baby?', which reached number
3 in the UK charts in August of that year. It's video, featuring Betty
and her twin 'Booettes' in spacesuits on some sort of kitschy sci-fi
set is a thing of rare beauty and joy. The highlight is Betty riding
a rocket, like a bucking bronco, to the stars...
*Betty became a journalist's favourite due to
her forthright and sometimes downright catty opinions on her fellow
popsters. She once said she didn't like former New Kid On The Block
Joey Lawrence because he had 'girly arms'.
*Winner of a 'Best Newcomer' award at 1991's Brits
she appeared in a minidress covered in hundreds of triangular mirrors.
Her acceptance speech ended with the phrase, "Long live Des O'Connor!"
*Her second LP, 'Grrr! It's Betty Boo' was described
by none other than Madonna as "criminally overlooked". At
one point Madonna tried to sign her to her Maverick label in the states.
*Betty withdrew from the public eye for family
reasons, only to reappear gradually as a songwriter, co-writing Hearsay's
'Pure & Simple' and writing songs for Girls Aloud.
*Relations between Betty and GA's record company
soured when they asked her to pay for her own Platinum disc of their
first album. She asked them how big the disk was. They replied, "normal
size." She then asked, "Is it big enough to stick it up your
arse?"
*Betty Boo invented Girl Power! An advert in 'The
Stage' asked for 'Five Betty Boos'... those five turned out to be The
Spice Girls!
*Sample spotters may want to check out 'Captain
Of Your Ship' by Reparata & The Delrons, where they will recognise
a chunk of 'Doin The Do'. We highly recommend this...
